Torrential Angel is a bit of a mystery – think escape, anxiety and a fit of mania driving creativity to produce a few minutes of sound that doesn’t fit definitively into a clear style.
There’s a hell of a lot going on in the intro…but get through the first 20 seconds and there’s a fusion of sounds blending different genres and influences – the horn-like backwards guitar was apparently taken from the Twilight Singers, and the panting noise was something picked up from Frank Black of the Pixies, all working alongside bellowed vocals. There’s an ongoing mandolin part that keeps creeping through (apparently learnt while playing bluegrass) and somehow everything resolves to more of a rock feel at the end.
